Ok, I heard the term solar cell so what is it? Well, a solar cell, also known as a photovoltaic cell, is a device that is capable of transforming solar energy into electricity.
This is done using the photovoltaic effect. Simply put a solar cell is a device which is used to capture energy from the sun while a photovoltaic cell is a device that captures energy from an unknown source. To power large appliances it is possible to combine or assemble together a large number of solar cells. A group of solar cells assembled together is usually referred to as solar modules which are linked to photovoltaic arrays.
Solar cells have been used for many years to power small appliances and devices. The most commonly thought of solar powered device of the device has to be small calculators. These are the types of calculators that required no batteries at all and were functional anytime they happened to be reaching sunlight. This is possible because they were embedded with solar cells on the front which transformed the sunlight into electricity and in turn powering the calculator. The small solar cells were able to deliver sufficient energy required by the calculator to power the calculator at all times. Some of these calculators weren’t even equipped with an on and off button.
Of course, other devices of the past were capable of running off solar energy as well including sun lights. These are the lights that are placed in your yard or garden. They generally gather energy throughout the day using the sun and a group of solar cells equipped on top of the light itself. Most of these lights normally don’t come on until it begins getting dark outside. If it was sunny enough on that particular day then the light should have stored enough energy to be able to operate all throughout the night without going dim. If the light happens to go dim then either something is wrong with the solar cells or they just didn’t receive enough sunlight during the day.
From Cells to Panel |
As technology has advanced throughout the years, solar cells have become more and more high tech. They are now capable of heating the water using in your home or swimming pool and even powering any device or appliance in your home that runs off of electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, using solar power doesn’t emit any harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Solar energy is also less expensive than conventional electricity. Since sunlight is completely free or charge you will never have to pay another electric bill. Of course, the initial cost of a solar energy system is expensive but you will end up making your money back and saving more down the road.
Declining costs and exponential growth
Adjusting for inflation, it cost $96 per watt for a solar module in the mid-1970s. Process improvements and a very large boost in production have brought that figure down 99%, to 68¢ per watt in 2016, according to data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Swanson's law is an observation similar to Moore's Law that states that solar cell prices fall 20% for every doubling of industry capacity. It was featured in an article in the British weekly newspaper The Economist
Solar Energy In the future
Over the next 30 years the global demand for energy is projected to grow by 35%. The development of methods like fracking and directional drilling have opened vast new reserves of oil and natural gas. These technologies have up-ended global oil markets and turned the United States into one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers. At the same time, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are approaching
cost-parity with fossil fuels. In the past two decades, the cost of power produced by solar cells has dropped from nearly $8 per watt of capacity to less than one-tenth of that amount. Green Energy on the Rise Worldwide
According to a report published by the United Nations Environment
Program (UNEP), the world invested $286 billion in green energy
in 2015, an increase of 3% over the previous record set in 2011.
China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, led the way
in green energy investments, committing about a third of total
worldwide investments, or $102.9 billion. The United States, the
second largest emitter, is a distant second with $44.1 billion in new
investments — 20 percent less than it invested in 2014.

IMPACT
» Social
As a global middle class emerges, power and energy will become the glue that keeps civil societies together.
» Political
Climate change and environmental risks from nontraditional fossil fuel extraction will drive global political debates over the role of oil and natural gas versus expanded use of renewable energy sources.
» Economic
Domestically, the discovery of massive oil and natural gas reserves will bolster the
US economy. Globally, the emergence of renewable fuels will spark new industries and reduce barriers to power generation in developing nations.
» Environmental
Oil and coal will still provide the bulk of the global energy budget through at least the 2030s. Continued reliance on fossil fuels will increase atmospheric CO2, driving additional climate change. Negative effects could be offset by alternative energy technologies that are cost-competitive with fossil fuels.
» Defense
The prospect of US energy security will significantly reshape the strategic environment. While we become less dependent on foreign sources of energy, traditional oil- producing powers could experience significant economic disruption, opening the door for extremist ideologies to take root.
